Aurfruf: Recognition of the couple by calling them up in the synagogue for a blessing by the Rabbi and is held on the Shabbat (Sabbath) prior the wedding.

 

Huppah is a canopy under which a Jewish couple stand during their wedding ceremony. It consists of a cloth or sheet, sometimes a tallit (prayer shawl), stretched or supported over four poles, or sometimes manually held up by attendants to the ceremony.

 

Simcha:  Joy and the celebration of joy.

 

Oneg Shabbat: Literally means "Sabbath delight." A Jewish celebration in honor of the Sabbath that takes place after Friday Night Services and includes refreshments such as cheese, crudite, coffee, tea and cake.

 

Challah:  Braided loaf of white bread, traditional for Shabbat & the holdays

 

Ketubah:  Marriage Contract

 

Mazal Tov:  Literally, "Good luck," but in practice, "Congratulations!"

 

Sheva B'rachot:  Seven marriage blessings recited under the huppah
